I realize I shouldn't get all distracted from "A Really Simple Story" - page 6 of which is sitting half-pencilled on my fridge - but I was drawing on the train and something more profound than usual slipped out.

I was in New York at the time of the attacks, five years ago. Not... *physically* speaking (I've never really been anywhere), but I was there that day. Most of the world was in New York 5 years ago this morning. We couldn't help ourselves.
In the last 5 years I think we'll all agree a hell of a lot has changed. I guess I've been especially lucky because with my friends we've gone through the most important formative years of our life - 13 through 18 - dealing with these changes. Some days I wake up and feel in the middle of something - like anyone who was a late teenager in 1969. And, like that generation before us, we've got a hell of a lot to come. But lots of things are still the same. People haven't changed much in a few thousand years... stuff generally likes to be the way it is. Friends are still friends, life is still life, and the fat bearded guy on the bus still stinks - only now you're worried those rolls might be a bomb.

So, for now, I say cheers to the good world, and the good people stuck in it. We're all part of something bigger than ourselves. Get used to it.

Was it naive of us to assume the end of the Cold War would be the end of the great wars? Why do the big cultural antagonisms have to continue in this day and age? I don't want to waste my lifetime hating another culture, just for the sake of keeping ours intact.
Why can't cultural rigidity be overcome? I don't believe in mankind's progress as long as those ritualized tribal wars continue.
